My love for food came from my grandmother. She is Cuban and can throw it down in the kitchen! That woman is the best cook ever! I really do mean that. She should have been a chef or had her own restaurant. She can make any recipe taste better than anyone that made it. She has that knack for cooking without looking at a recipe. I would ask her for recipes and she would tell me that she just puts a little bit of this in or a pinch of this in.
So. I would usually have to watch her and write down what she was putting in a recipe and then estimate the size. Very difficult! And let me tell you no matter how hard I try I cannot make the food taste as good as grandma’s! What a shame! Oh well at least I have the wonderful memories of her cooking that I can take with me wherever I go. I will try my best to cook like her, but I cannot make promises! Maybe I will get better with age?
My favorite dish that she would make is called Ropa Vieja, which is shredded beef stew; Cuban style of course! I loved this dish so much. I would be so happy when I would walk in the door and smell this cooking. Such a nice thing to come home to. I never got her recipe, which made me sad. Until I found this recipe and it’s as close as it’s going to get. It’s a fantastic recipe that brings me back to my grandma’s cooking!
