Grandma worked a hard factory job most of my childhood years. I could tell when things were starting to get rough on her. She just didn’t have the energy that she did at one time. We would go over there anytime after she was done working, and you could pretty much guarantee that she was going to be in bed. She got up, went to work, came home, and went to bed. Finally, my mom and her brothers and sisters convinced her that it was time to retire.
That was no kind of life, and she had paid her dues already. That was one of the happiest times of her life I think. She had so much free time and energy, she didn’t know what to do with herself. So, she went to the kitchen.
She started whipping up the most amazing foods and desserts I had ever tasted! My favorite by a landslide was her layered pudding dessert, just like this one from Mel’s Kitchen Cafe. She was so proud of this one, she MADE us sit down and try it, whether we wanted to or not.
Now, she makes it all the time. We can’t have a family gathering without this coming out of the fridge at some point, and that’s okay with me!
