What types of cakes do you make for occasions? Are you the showy type and makes the most elaborate cakes that ever existed? Or are you the stick-with-the-classic type, always baking the classic ones because you know you will never go wrong with those? I am a bit of both actually. I learned all classic cake recipes from my Grandma and my Mom, which is why I am used to making them all the time. But I have friends who bake a lot, and I always learned a few new things from them.
For someone who always gives cakes as gifts, I will admit that I almost always lean towards making a classic. Everyone loves a classic cake- that’s true in almost every type of dessert. However, there is nothing wrong with revamping the cake a bit.
Just like this almond yellow cake that I found over at Always Order Dessert. It’s the classic yellow cake except that it undergone a little make over. You have to try this cake for you to see what I mean.
I made this for a friend once and just went crazy with the decorations on top of the cake. She absolutely loved this. She told me that she loved that the classic taste was still there even with all the flavors.

Quick Tip: If you can’t find marcona almonds, regular blanched roasted salted almonds or hazelnuts will work.
