I didn’t know what a polenta was. I had to Google it to know that it’s like cornmeal, but not quite. It’s an Italian ingredient and I wasn’t very familiar with it. Why am I suddenly talking about polenta? Well, after I tasted this amazing cake at one of my friends’ house, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. She served me a piece of yellow cake with something that looked like berries on top. And when I took a bite, I couldn’t go back anymore. It was amazing!
She told me it was called polenta ricotta cake. She got it from a website and decided to try it for her friends. I’m glad I was one of the lucky friends who were there.
It tasted savory and sweet at the same time. As if you are actually eating a main course and a dessert in one. It tasted really good with tea too, although I wouldn’t say no to a cup of coffee for this.
I asked the recipe from her and she led me to this website called Smells Like Home. I tried the recipe for my family. I used dates as suggested because yes, I couldn’t find figs at my local grocery.
My husband loved it. At first, I couldn’t gauge his reaction because it seemed he didn’t know what to feel about what he just tasted. But he actually loved it and ate another slice!
It’s a hit for the kids too! I served it with ice cream for them (ice cream on a glass though, not on top of the slice).

Quick Tip: If you can’t find any figs, use dried dates or craisins instead.
