Going to Aunt Julie’s house always meant that we were going to be put to work. She lived on a farm with cows, horses, ducks, pigs, goats, the whole thing. There was always plenty to do, and I loved it! My siblings weren’t quite as excited to go there as I was, but they still had some fun I think. Who wouldn’t be able to have fun with all those animals running around anyway? There was one thing that was guaranteed when we went there, after all the chores were done… Aunt Julie was going to be doing some cooking and baking. She did the farm work because she had to. She cooked because she loved it.
It really shows through in a food when the person that prepared it enjoyed what they were doing, at least that’s what I think. Her banana bread was one of those things that she loved making the most, so it was always amazing. She added a little something extra to hers, just like this recipe from Cravings of a Lunatic.
I could sit and eat the whole loaf myself, and sometimes if my brothers and sisters didn’t come with me, she would let me! That was a real special treat. I would make sure to go out and do some extra work in the garden or something though to work that sugar off!
