When my Mom used to make Shepherd’s pie, I would hover around in the kitchen to watch and see what she was doing. For such a simple dish, it always seemed to fascinate me for some reason. When I was really little, she would pull up a stool next to her so that I could watch. As I got older, she started letting me do some of the steps for her. By the time I was a teenager, I was making pretty much the entire thing by myself and she was the one that was sitting and watching.
It was always a nice bonding time for us, no matter who was doing the cooking and preparations. We spent a lot of time talking about what was going on in my life and she taught me all the life lessons that I needed to know to fix any issues that I was having.
When I saw this recipe on All Recipes, I think I got a little teary-eyed remembering those days from so long ago. This is exactly the way we used to make this when I was a kid. Now I make it, and my daughter is the one watching and talking to me. What a terrific tradition!
