When I was a kid, I often watched my grandmother in the kitchen. She never talked a lot whenever she’s cooking; but she always allowed me and my other girl cousins to watch her cook. We’re always quiet and just observing her make whatever it was she’s making. Unlike the boys who couldn’t keep still, we were always allowed inside. We were even allowed to help at the small tasks. So whenever Grandma finally presented her masterpiece, we always felt proud. We had a part in that even though it was just to hand her the milk.
This strawberry basil yogurt cake recipe that I found over at Always Order Dessert reminds me with one of my grandmother’s recipe. It tastes almost the same as this version, except that my grandmother didn’t use yogurt; she used milk. But the moistness and the denseness of the cakes are very similar.
When I first made this for my family, my husband asked if I had finally acquired Grandma’s recipe. He was able to taste the replica via my Mom, and he found it delicious. I told him, I haven’t; that this was a different version.
“Tastes just as good,” he told me; but he didn’t say anything anymore. He just devoured his piece and asked for another. Oh yes, he definitely loved it.
