I was already warned by our other friends never to answer my phone when Elise called. Elise was our friend who was six months pregnant by the time that this happened. She was advised by the doctor to take a lot of rest so she’s staying at home. She was a workaholic prior to her knowledge of the pregnancy so it has taken a toll on her body. Begrudgingly, she has agreed and took an indefinite leave from work much to her husband’s relief. She wasn’t even allowed to work from home because everyone knew how she got whenever she started working.
One night, I made a mistake of answering my phone without looking at the caller ID. When I answered with an absentminded hello, the response was a cry. I realized it was Elise and I kept asking her what was wrong. Was she in pain? Did something happen? I was already starting to get dressed while I was talking to her. In fact, I was already in my car, a block away from home, when she finally stopped crying and told me that all she wanted was a shrimp gumbo and there were no shrimps in the house! I was so angry and relieved at the same time. I passed by the grocery store, bought her shrimps, went to her house and dumped the shrimps in the kitchen without talking to her. A week later, she visited me with her husband, bearing a cake as form of apology. She knew she worried me. Of course I forgave her, but goodness, I really did panic! I wonder if I would be the same if I became pregnant? Poor future hubby then. And poor friends!

Quick Tip: Turn it into a seafood style gumbo by simply alternating the shrimp for other seafood or fish.
