Maria couldn’t study without sugar. Ever. She was the type that you always find eating even in class. She snuck in food without anyone noticing just because she swore she couldn’t think without eating. I liked her because she was so funny and so friendly, but I was kind of jealous because she couldn’t get fat. She was still so skinny after all of those sugary treats she always ate. However, one time, the teacher caught her and forbade her to eat. We weren’t really sure if she was faking it, but she did fail all of her exams in the succeeding days. She also became a bit less of a fun girl. There was always a frown on her face and she always looked like she had no energy.
During the day when she would retake the exams, one of our classmates decided to sneak in a bag of homemade glazed donuts in her backpack. We were all concerned about her that we even waited for her at the school grounds. When she was done with the exams, she went straight towards us and thanked our classmate who gave her the donuts. She said it saved her. The next day, she got all her exam results and guess what—she passed them all and with flying colors! She still didn’t get special permission to eat during class hours, but the school might have made an exception during examinations. This recipe for the classic glazed donuts reminded me of my high school classmate Maria and her love for anything with sugar on it.

Quick Tip: For chocolate-glazed doughnuts, add 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa to the glaze. Don’t forget to cook the donut “holes,” too.
