When I first came across this dessert I was like, “Oh, hand no!” Fish, in a dessert? Yuck! I love Amish recipes but I thought I was going to have to draw my line in the sand with this one. However, much to my surprise, this yummy dessert does not contain any of our pond friends. In fact, it’s chock full of creamy, gooey, CUSTARD! I love custard and this dessert has plenty of it as well as tender apples. Talk about delicious! So, get your baking aprons on and head into the kitchen with me to bake up this luscious dessert.
My friends over at Recipe Lion had this to say:
This uniquely named Amish dessert is truly a treat. Don’t worry, though no fish is included! Amish Apple Fish Dessert is basically baked apple custard. An old family recipe, the origin of the name Apple Fish is a reference to the practice of shaping the dough into a fish, and then filling it with apples and custard. Since the dough is very soft, try buying a fish-shaped pan if you truly want your dessert to have a traditional fish shape. Otherwise, any baking pan will do. A creamy, cinnamon dessert, Apple Fish is sure to be a hit at the family dinner table.
