It was my husband’s birthday coming up, and of course, he didn’t want to do anything. It was the same response every single year. He didn’t want to go anywhere, he didn’t want any gifts, and he certainly did not want a cake. I never understood it. Birthdays were always a super fun and exciting time at my house growing up, and by the sounds of what his mother told me, they were at their house too. I just don’t understand what happened to him between then and now, and I don’t know if I ever will.
I usually try and sneak some sort of dinner, treat, or social activity in near his birthday, just to make myself feel better about it. I really think that he could care less if he just continued on getting older without ever stopping to recognize it. Maybe that’s it… maybe he doesn’t want to age.
Last year, I found this red velvet cheesecake on Group Recipes and made it a few days before his special day. When he saw it, I noticed a little twinkle in his eye. I think he was happier than what he let on that I did something for him.
