In Just 2 Steps, You Will Have The BEST Cabbage Salad The World Has Ever Known

I’m pretty sure the heavy cream is required for this recipe.  There really are no substitutions when you want something creamy and decadent that only heavy cream can provide.  Personally, I like the flavor of Hellman’s mayo as well, so a miracle whip substitution wouldn’t fit my tastes either.

I made this recipe and my husband RAVED for days as he enjoyed the leftovers.  I hope your family loves it too!

Ingredients

14 ounce bag Fresh Express coleslaw mix

1 cup Hellman’s mayonnaise

2 tablespoons Borden’s heavy cream

1 teaspoon French’s yellow mustard

1 teaspoon McCormick garlic salt

1 teaspoon McCormick black pepper

Directions

Add all of the ingredients to the bowl of a food processor and process in short bursts until finely ground.

Chill for 1 hour before serving.

Quick Tip – If you’re serving this at a BBQ, keep it cool by nesting a couple of glass bowls together.  In the top bowl, put the coleslaw and in the bottom bowl place ice.

Thank you Buns In My Oven for this recipe!

I’ve always used a small head of cabbage, a couple of carrots & shredded them up & added mayonaise, salt & pepper. I’ll have to try it with the garlic powder & heavy cream. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

Linda if you want to make it like KFC do it in your blender. Put the cabbage, carrots, cabbage in divided amounts. Cover it with water and chop, chop, chop.Drain each batch thoroughly. You do not have to use it all at the same time. Take out what you need and put the rest in the fridge in an airtight container. The amount you are using , put in about a tblp of sugar, lots of salt and pepper.Put it in the fridge until ready to use and add the amount of Hellmans mayo Puttin the sugar in ahead of time makes the flavors blend before putting in the mayo. Good luck

KFC Has always been my favorite cold slaw mainly because of the dressing…I like the sweetness. I finally went on line and found KFC dressing! haven’t tried the buttermilk yet…very soon as I always have it on hand!

It’s easy to make buttermilk. 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice in 1 cup mixing cup, fill the rest with milk. Let set for 5 minutes. That’s it! I’ve used this recipe because I never have buttermilk when I need it!!!

Yes. My southern cole slaw has equal parts of sugar, salt, and vinegar, plus twice the amt of Hellman’s mayo. Pepper is problematic and should be limited. I don’t use pepper at all. The cole slaw needs to be made, mixed thoroughly, and put into a stainer inside a big bowl because the vinegar and salt are drawing items and remove liquids in cabbage.

You say “blender” in the notes at the beginning but then “food processor” in the recipe. Can I fine chop first with a Salad Shooter and then blend at the end? I don’t have a food processor.

Good luck Yes but not as good. Go to a yard sale and pick up one for a few bucks. Well worth it. No vinegar just use what I said.

The best coleslaw is shredded cabbage some shredded carrots and some purple cabbage for color mixed with Henri’s Tastee dressing. Was always a hit in my parents restaurants. I always use the pre-cut cabbage being that there is only the two of us

That’s all we have ever used.
The last couple times I added 1 stalk very fine chopped celery per bag of slaw. Was awesome.

Miracle Whip has high fructose corn syrup in it. I quit that (and lost 45 pounds subsequently without even trying) years ago. If you make your own mayo (and it’s done the same as miracle whip) and add a bit of sugar or sweetener to your mayo mix it tastes like Miracle Whip without the nastiness. Please try it! It’s really good and so much better for you! <3

I’m only telling you b/c I was a HUGE Miracle Whip fan, too! I hated mayo. But I LIKE the mayo I make myself! 🙂

I agree with you. In my opinion some things call for miracle whip, and Cole slaw is one of those things. For years I’ve used miracle whip and sugar and sometimes will thin it just a bit with a tad of milk or cream. Everywhere I’ve ever taken it, I’m told it’s the best slaw they’ve ever eaten. They never believe me when they ask I made it. I like sweet Slaw.

For really good cole slaw is a recipe from my mom. Get a whole head of green cabbage, grate it manually, put it on a towel & salt it real good, roll the towel up & sit it on the side. Work the roll every 15 mins or so. Check to taste you prefer. To finish add pepper, hellmans, finely grated onions, grated carrots, tblsp sour cream, & white vinegar to taste. It tastes bet the next day. enjoy !!

I love coleslaw but I ALWAYS sweeten it some. and I prefer it with some green bell pepper in it too. I can’t imagine mustard and garlic in it. You never know till you try something though. So I will try it.

I love great tasting food with limited prep and so good it leaves an impression. I love the use of fresh herbs and extreme taste.

I have easier best coleslaw ever. 1 bag fresh express coleslaw mix, 1 bottle hidden Valley ranch coleslaw dressing. 1 tablespoon celery seed, 3 tablespoons honey. Mix all well and refrigerate for 2 hrs. No muss or fuss and everyone loves it.

Try 1 cup Mayo Hellmans
1 tsp celery seed
1/2 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp Lawrys seasoning salt
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 to 2 tablespoons of sugar or Splenda.
Amazing dressing

I remember my Mom putting the cabbage in the blender but she had to press the liquid out with a cloth. Then she added mayo, a little vinegar and dissolved sugar in the vinegar and mixed it in with the blended coleslaw. She also added a little carrot for color. It was delicious but I could never duplicate it.
Since I am diabetic, I am going to try your recipe. 🙂

Never heard of putting hot dog mustard in coleslaw….I’d bet any of the great cooks out there can whip up a bowl of slaw that makes this recipe look bad and I doubt this is the best slaw the world has even known..

If I’m going to make cabbage salad, I am going to get a fresh cabbage, not that ugly stuff in bags…heaven knows how it’s been handled or cleaned. I finely shred carrots, put fresh cabbage in the chopper till it is small pieces, chop green onions (even finely chopped celery sometimes, for variety). I don’t find mayonnaise has any flavour at all, it’s just like tasteless fluffed up grease. I have to have my Miracle Whip salad dressing, otherwise, there is no taste and such a waste of my freshly chopped veggies. Isn’t it amazing how much people can differ in their tastes?

I, too, truly love fresh coleslaw. This recipe is very similar to my mom’s cole slaw recipe which we both made ever since I was just a kid, with a few alterations. First, we always cut our own cabbage, but in recent years I have used purchased cabbage mix with carrots. It doesn’t matter whether you prefer angel-hair cut or chopped. That’s the least important part of the recipe. We used only Henry’s brand cole slaw dressing, never mayonnaise, but I no longer seem to be able to find it. Marzetti and Marie’s make perfectly satisfactory substitutes. No mustard for us, but adding celery seeds is amust, about 1/2 teaspoon to this much cabbage. Add 2-4 Tbls grated or finely minced sweet onion. Garlic salt and pepper just as this recipe says. Double the heavy cream and whip/whisk it until thickened and starting to soft peak before combining all the ingredients in a large bowl and folding together until thoroughly mixed.

I always use Blue Plate mayonnaise in my slow! Love how it tastes. Most other mayos taste like old cold grease but I can eat Blue Plate straight outta the jar!!!

I use this recipe for Cole Slaw…Chopped cabbage ( my husband didn’t like shredded cabbage), finely shredded carrots, finely minced bell pepper, finely minced onion, dash of salt. For the dressing I used Hellman’s mayo, 2 tablespoons of sour cream, 2 to 3 teaspoons of sugar and mix well then fold into the cabbage mixture. Refrigerate for a few hours or even overnight so flavors can meld. Delicious!

I made this today exactly as printed…. was good, but I prefer my Hellmans, apple cider vinegar, a little sugar, sweet pickle relish…The wonderful thing about slaw is there are so many ways to make it and its always good. My mom made a sweet slaw with cabbage, crushed pineapple(drained), Miracle Whip, and of course a little sugar, and mini marshmallows… so many variations.. none bad..

Mine’s even easier. Can’t really call it a recipe though. Bagged coleslaw, Marzetti’s coleslaw dressing, and golden raisins. I put the coleslaw mix in the food processor to make it finer and add the rest of the ingredients to taste. A real time saver when I’m trying to prepare a big meal like Thanksgiving and Easter dinner.

Here’s how I do coldslaw…….I use the mix with the green and purple cabbage and carrots and add dried cranberries and peanuts. And use a poppyseed dressing, such as Brianna’s. Yum!

I agree with the marzetti’s slaw dressing, southern style. The rest of is your choice ever what hits your taste buds. Have fun and a delicious Cole slaw.

I worked for an Amish salad stand and the owner would add the smallest amount of pineapple juice to their batch….and it would fly out of the cold case! No one guessed the magic that drew them in!

Can’t wait to try your recipe. I like all kinds of slaw, but my favorite is the one my mom always used. Grate a head of cabbage on large holes if box grater, grate some onion, mayo, salt, and pepper. Just wonderful!!

I grind my Cabbage and Carrots in Blender. Then I Drain unroll dry…I mix my Mayo.wtth 2 teas.Vinegar, then I mix it with Cabbage and Carrots ,I add celery seed ,small amount
And I add two teas.sweet relish. It is very good…..

The southern method…..hand cut my cabbage, not put it in processor.
Cabbage, carrots, kraft mayo, mustard, vinegar, sugar, celery salt, regular salt and pepper.
Good on hot dogs, BBQ, anything.

I live in Alabama and always use Dukes mayonnaise. It has a nice lemony taste and not so much fat and sugar. I also use the chicken flavor packet from ramen noodles. It makes the slaw taste wonderful.

My Mom shredded fresh cabbage by hand with small holed grater. Then she added a little salt, 1-2 finely shredded radishes, finely shredded sweet onion, Hellman’s mayo, mix, cover, refrigerate. Yum!!

This sounds good but never heard of putting mustard in cole slaw. Would not use Miracle Whip ever! Yuck, and no onions in cole slaw. Celery sounds good, also purple cabbage and carrot. The cream sounds good. Never used that. Always use mayo. It’s such a prefrence. Some folks like creamy mayo and others like sweet, with sugar and Miracle Whip. We are all different folks with different taste buds! ENJOY everyone, whatever kind you make!!!

I make fole slaw eirh 1 bag of come slaw
3 Tbsp sugar
2 Tbsp white vinegar
Hellmans mayo
Mix n chill
The Best !

Thank you Jessica for posting YOUR Cole Slaw Recipe!!! Everyone seems to have their own ideas for “their own” recipe… more power to them. …but THIS RECIPE IS YOURS!!! I’m with you.. I Love the Fine Cut Slaw Much better, and I Like your idea of starting with the pre-sliced Slaw. It already has some carrots & it’s measured for me, so I can grab a 2nd bag if we need more. No messy counter, cutting board or extra cabbage in the frig. I’m also a Mayo fan, but Miracle Whip is in the frig for the taking. Our KFC in “Farmville, USA” still has the fine chopped… our local market calls that Dixie Slaw. If my men of the house want fried chicken.. I grab it from our new Popeye’s & their REAL mashed potatoes, huge homemade biscuit an gravy with the zip of a few green chili’s diced in.
Again, Thanks for your recipe Jessica!!

I also love your recipe and as soon as I get to the store will get ingredients to make it. Thanks for sharing.

I add sweet pickle juice to Hellmans Mayo along with grated carrots, celery seed ,salt and pepper, sometimes add green peppers and onions chopped very fine.

My Mom always made very finely shredded cole slaw….and loved it. Every time we went to the restaurant or even in the care center… they used the BAGGED cole slaw mix!!!!! Now unless you have an excellent set of teeth… that is not the thing… So glad KFC realized that and made theirs the right way.. That’s why so many people like it!!

I like the blender, since I always paper thin slice my cabbage on a meat slicer so its fine threads of cabbage. Two carrots shredded But I like a sweeter dressing 1 1/2 cups hellmann’s mayonnaise 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/2 cup pineapple juice two teaspoons sugar. So now I’d place everything in the blender. May need to do 1/2 a head of cabbage at a time depending on size of the head of cabbage you used

I use a bag of slaw, buttermilk ranch dressing (bottled) and sugar. I don’t measure, I go by looks and taste. Best slaw I ever ate and the easiest too.

I find it odd that no one has mentioned horse radish or wasabi, I thought that was what made the old kfc recipe so,good? Maybe it’s a Canadian thing.
My mom always put a little in the coleslaw along with the mayo, so I do too. She added raisins and sometimes nuts, I don’t because my hubby doesn’t like fruit in his veg salad, but raisins or cranberries and some nuts are good. She always put a little celery,in for crunch, and grated carrots and grated cabbage.
